Jean Bosco Karenzi, the Genocide survivor shared his testimony on how Tutsi were cruelly killed in former EAFO Nyamishaba. He said, “Killers used to put ladies in rows, cut them with machetes and throw them into the lake Kivu. As most of people who refuged here knew to swim, some tried swimming but finally killers chased them with a boat and fired those who tried to raise heads.”
Being of Karenzi’s view, the President of IBUKA in Karongi District, Vedaste Ngarambe wished that the commemoration event for Tutsis who perished in Nyamishaba should be held on 15th, the same date they were killed. “Kayishema Clement who was tasked to exterminate Tutsi in Kibuye prefecture started killings here at Nyamishaba on 15th and concluded in the same city at Gatwaro stadium on 18th, whereas on 19th and 20th April 1994 all Tutsi were already wiped out," said Ngarambe.
IBUKA management in Karongi Disctrict as well as 1994 Genocide Survivors of Bwishyura sector particularly wish to have a memorial plaque at Nyamishaba on the shore of the Lake in order to preserve the Genocide history in this area and honor all Tutsis who were killed thrown into the lake.
The Executive Secretary of Western Province, Mrs Florence Mujawamariya promised the survivors that they are going to work with the Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement (MINUBUMWE) for satisfying their wishes such as having a memorial plaque on kivu lake shores at Nyamishaba.
In Nyamishaba Genocide memorial rest more than 3000 Tutsis while the number of those who were killed thrown into the lake is not determined.
