The visit aimed at getting an impression of physical facilities and atmosphere of the college, and see the training, innovation and research. It was also for meeting the college management and heads of units in order to discuss their experiences and expectations.

The DVC-TIDR and Division Managers had a meeting with teaching staff representatives and head of departments and units. Speaking to the participants, the DVC-TIDR said that they planned the visit as an occasion to interact with staff since their appointment at Rwanda Polytechnic three months ago.

Relating to the quality of education, the Prof. Richard focused on staff capacity, and said that Rwanda Polytechnic has established mechanisms for supporting the teaching staff to upgrade their skills.

He said, “If we have staff of a low level, they cannot be able to deliver the quality we need. This is why there is a process to hire staff, and the process to support them to upgrade their skills.” The DVC added that vertical promotion is an already approved initiative to support the teaching staff.

“You cannot stay in the same position for years if you perform well, so we decided to put a framework of supporting our academic staff, to upgrade their academic ranks and be recognized for their efforts, through vertical promotion. If your pathway is academic you need to always upskill,” the DVC told the participants.

In a bid to promote research and innovation, Dr. Parfait Yongabo said that RP is determined to make sure that researchers/staff are progressing in terms of career so as to give back to the community and contribute to socio-economic development of the country.
